The Americans with Disabilities Act (as amended) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act require equal and equitable access for individuals with disabilities. For students with documented disabilities, access is a civil right. Every effort must be made to provide students with accessible educational and instructional materials. AccessibilityĪccessibility of multimedia (audio, video, etc.) is integral to the success of students, staff, and faculty participation. MP4 videos of screencasts produced with such software can be hosted on Echo360, Youtube, or VImeo. UMass Amherst IT does not provide licenses or direct support for these products. Several other software products exist for creating screencasts Jing, Camtasia and Snagit, all by Technsmith, and Adobe Captivate (for Windows) are some of the more popular products at this time. UMass Amherst offers lecture capture software and equipment (Classroom Capture) and screencasting software (Universal Capture: Personal) through Echo360, a media capture technology company.
Alternatively, instructors can create a screencast of their slides with accompanying narration and annotation for students to view outside of class. For example, an instructor who uses PowerPoint in their teaching could choose to record themselves delivering a presentation in the classroom, and make recordings available online for students to review lectures. Lecture capture and "screencasting" encompass a range of technologies that provide instructors with the capacity to record content in their classrooms or on their own computing device.
